What I’ve Learnt from Meghan Markle (and Meeting Her)

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrive for a reception with delegates from the Commonwealth Youth Forum at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, London, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Quick question: have you met A Few of My Fab Friends yet? I’ve dedicated a chunk of my site to introducing you to some women that I find inspiring and just all sorts of lovely, having met them either online or off.

Well, I’d like to introduce you to another, if you don’t mind. Even if she’s just a friend of the in-my-head variety. You may already know (okay, who am I kidding you know her!) Ms. Meghan Markle, soon-to-be wife of Prince Henry of Wales.

When my mother introduced me to Suits, my favourite characters quickly became Harvey Specter, Jessica Pearson, Donna Paulsen and Rachel Zane (Meghan). A few episodes in, I became curious about the actress that played Rachel and Google introduced me to Meghan Markle.

She’s Genuinely Herself

It didn’t take long after that for me to go over to her Instagram account. That’s where I really formed a liking to her. I found that she wasn’t your typical slim-tummy-tea touting, designer-brand drenched, celebrity. Meghan’s Instagram posts showed a refreshingly normal, relatable side of her, alongside elements of her life that were still aspirational (but not in a “look-at-me, look at me, I’m fabulous!” sort of way). Oh, and her caption-writing skills? They were impeccable. A lady after my own heart.

She Makes Her Voice Heard

After finding Meghan’s Instagram, it didn’t take very long to discover another gem of hers online. She also had – wait for it – a blog. The Tig (named after her favourite red wine, Tignatelli) was a lifestyle blog (now defunct) she started back in 2014; and upkept so well, might I add. Before I started this blog (my second), I was the queen of blog binge-reading (especially a well-written one!); so as you can imagine, The Tig was quickly added to my list of faves.

The writer in me absolutely loved Meghan’s writing. I geek out over hearing people share passionately about their interests, what drives them, and what makes them the persons they are. She’d shared everything from not fitting in in high school, to her favourite wines and drink recipes, how her dad helped her accept herself fully, and so much more. It was so refreshing to find that Meghan is a multi-faceted woman; beyond the glitz and glam of  her (then) job, she carved out a space online to speak and to share.

Then There Was Meeting Her

(Just another day at work, Talisa! Oh, by the way, you’re meeting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle today!)

I secretly wish I’d known in advance that I would meet them; I would’ve turned the chic level way up with my outfit! All of that aside though, meeting and speaking with Meghan was such a fun and lovely experience.

She’s just as gorgeous IRL as she is on television, by the way.

We spoke for a short short, and she is just as passionate about youth-related matters as ever.

Remember the down-to-earth vibe I got from her Instagram and blog? Ever-present in her personality and her demeanor. I felt like I was talking to a new friend or someone that I’d been introduced to by a friend because we share a lot of the same interests and ideas.

I am drawn to and inspired by passionate souls, people who are spirited and yet beautifully real and relatable. Meghan embodied all of that and more.

(Also, who doesn’t want to tell their kids they met and chatted with the Duke and Dutchess of Sussex?)

Now, excuse me while I go bake my scones and stock up on the champagne. The royal wedding approaches!
